Comment of : Symmetry plan behavior
Could you please clarify (or send a plot) ? When there is a symmetry plane, the electric field is zero perpendicularly to the symmetry plan, so it is expected that it be "stronger along the symmetry plan than perpendicular to this symmetry plan", since something > zero. Another remark: symmetry may not be perfect due to asymmetries in meshing and/or charge density, so that you may get something non zero but small for the normal electric field (what you may be getting, from what I understand from the question).
